EDR / Black Box Downloads

An Event Data Recorder (EDR) is a device, mounted in a vehicle, which records objective information about a collision enabling the Police, collision investigators, manufacturers and researchers to better understand the causes & consequences of collisions and what could be done to mitigate them.

TRL have been at the forefront of the use of this data, including preparing technical reports for the European Commission examining the road safety benefits of EDRs in EU/UK vehicles.

TRL regularly use Collision Data Retrieval equipment to image and interpret Event Data Recorder (EDR) data from vehicles on behalf of insurer and solicitor clients as well as for UK law enforcement agencies. The retrieved data has proven helpful in being able to verify or dismiss driver accounts, as well as confirming the operating conditions of the vehicle immediately prior to the collision.

Vehicle infotainment and telematics systems can offer additional evidence that is not typically recorded in an Event Data Recorder. This information serves as another piece of the puzzle in our collision reconstruction analysis. By downloading the infotainment and telematics systems, we can gain access to valuable data such as recent destinations, call logs and the navigation history of the vehicle. Having this data can link a particular individual to a vehicle, identify potential sources for driver distraction/inattention, link a particular vehicle to a location and assist with identifying the general path of travel of a vehicle.

Black box insurance works when your car is fitted with a small ‘black box’ device, about the size of a smartphone, which records speed, distance travelled and the time of day or night that you are on the road.

The device also assesses your driving style by monitoring braking and cornering. It will also record the types of road on which you typically travel, and the times of day and night you tend to drive, to build up a comprehensive profile of you as a driver.

Insurers hope that telematics technology will help to improve driving standards overall by rewarding safe driving with cheaper insurance premiums but where there is a collision, insurance black box analysis can be crucial to the investigation of the incident.
